Our Story
Welcome to the Edmonton Volleyball Association
We’re a vibrant hub of volleyball excellence rooted in a rich history of passion and dedication. Meet the driving force behind our association - David and Doreen Ross. With a remarkable journey spanning over three decades, this dynamic duo has left an indelible mark on the volleyball landscape.
David and Doreen Ross, cherished figures within the volleyball community, have donned various roles – players, coaches, officials, clinicians, and administrators over the course of their enduring devotion to the sport. Their commitment played a pivotal role in propelling volleyball to prominence within the province during the early seventies, igniting a surge in participation that continued to flourish for the next thirty years.
In the wake of the dissolution of the 'old' Edmonton Phoenix Volleyball Club in the early months of 1975, the Ross’ took up the mantle with boundless enthusiasm. The inception of the Edmonton Friars Volleyball Club in the autumn of 1975 marked a pivotal moment. In that inaugural year, under the leadership of David and Doreen, a cohesive group of friends rallied together to form three women's teams and two men's teams. These teams, driven by their shared dedication, underwent rigorous training and enthusiastically competed in diverse tournaments across Alberta and Western Canada. The Friars, a testament to the Ross' resolute spirit, remained a prominent presence for an impressive quarter-century until 1998.
In tune with the evolving needs of adult and club teams aspiring for structured competition, David and Doreen spearheaded the formation of the Edmonton Volleyball Association (EVA) in 1976. Their meticulous efforts encompassed intricate paperwork, including crafting a constitution, establishing by-laws, and securing the EVA's status as a registered Alberta Society. David assumed the mantle of the EVA's inaugural President. The fruits of their labor were evident as the EVA commenced operations with remarkable vigor in its debut year, boasting an impressive assembly of 20 men's teams and 14 women's teams. Tirelessly collaborating with the City of Edmonton, the Ross’ navigated challenges to secure suitable gymnasiums for league matches, fostering a robust and enduring partnership.
Concurrently, they fostered harmonious relationships with the Alberta and Canadian Volleyball Associations, strongly advocating for EVA teams to align with both bodies. The outcomes of their efforts echo through time, sustaining productive alliances to this day. Evidencing their prowess, the Edmonton Volleyball Association had ascended to become one of the largest city leagues in North America, showcasing nearly 200 teams – 108 co-ed, 48 women's, and 42 men's teams.
Through their selfless dedication to every facet of volleyball, the Ross’ have paved pathways for countless individuals to partake in our beloved sport
“I've played volleyball in the EVA league for 20 years. I've met some of my best friends playing here. Why would I go play anywhere else?”
